UK becomes world's first nation to approve AstraZeneca-Oxford Covid vaccine

Britain on Wednesday became the first country in the world to authorize coronavirus vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca. The British Department of Health said it had accepted a recommendation from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency to allow the use of the shot as it battles a major winter surge driven by a new, highly contagious variant of the virus. The authorisation in the U.K. is significant for India, as the Pune based Serum Institute of India (SII) has tied up with AstraZeneca to deploy the vaccine in India. It is the second COVID-19 vaccine to receive the green light in Britain, after one developed by Pfizer and its German partner, BioNTech, which is already being administered throughout the U.K.The U.K. has bought 100 million doses of the AstraZeneca shot. British Health Secretary Matt Hancock told Sky News that the vaccine’s rollout would start Monday.

“Today is an important day for millions of people in the UK who will get access to this new vaccine,” AstraZeneca Chief Executive Pascal Soriot said.“It has been shown to be effective, well-tolerated, simple to administer and is supplied by AstraZeneca at no profit.”
