At close, the Sensex was down 1,158.08 points or 2.14% at 52,930.31, and the Nifty was down 359.10 points or 2.22% at 15, 808 as a result of Inflationary and interest rate hike headwinds, that have emerged as a fallout of the Ukraine-Russia war and easy monetary policy, are biting into equity returns. HCL Technologies was the only Sensex stock to have closed with gains, up 0.08%. IndusInd Bank was the worst performer, down 5.7%, followed by Tata Steel, Bajaj Finance, and Bajaj Finserv. About 747 shares have advanced, 2542 shares declined, and 84 shares are unchanged. The BSE MidCap index fell 2.2 percent and the BSE SmallCap index shed 1.9 percent.
